Matrix Methods in Geometrical Optics

چکیده
As well as the geometrical methods used for solving lens problems, and locating the size and position of images in optical systems, there is an alternate, perhaps more versatile, method involving matrix manipulation. Many of you will be familiar with the use of simple 2x2 matrices. Firstly, however, before I consider the use of matrices in optics, I will review the matrix solution of two simultaneous equations.

Study of Geometrical-Dependence of Glow Discharge on Gain Coefficient in a TE-N2 Laser
Based on a set of experiments, using a transversely exited (TE) oscillator-amplifier N2-laser system (OSC-AMP) with the AMP effective length of 31cm, measurements have been carried out for small signal gain, g0, and saturation energy density, Es, for different AMP gap separations. It was found that the gain-value depends on the AMP electrode gap separation, d<su...
متن کاملParaxial Optics
Paraxial optics is sometimes known as the Gaussian optics. It is the simplest framework where optical systems are described. A great variety of textbooks in optics include specific chapters to the paraxial approximation of the geometrical optics. Other textbooks focused in geometrical optics propose that the paraxial treatment should be included as part of the first approach to the subject. The...
متن کاملMicro-channels over the glass surface made by interaction of Ar+ laser beam and Ag+/Na+ ion-exchanged glasses
Micro-channels are made over the Ag+/Na+ ion-exchanged soda-lime glass surface by interaction of an intense Ar+ laser beam and the silver ions inside the glass matrix. The Ar+ laser beam reduces the Ag+ ions inside the matrix. The Ag+ atoms aggregate into silver nano-clusters around the interaction area, inside the glass matrix. Aggregation of the silver atoms and the thermal effects of the int...
متن کاملImproved T-matrix computations for large, nonabsorbing and weakly absorbing nonspherical particles and comparison with geometrical-optics approximation.
We show that the use of a matrix inversion scheme based on a special lower triangular-upper triangular factorization rather than on the standard Gaussian elimination significantly improves the numerical stability of T-matrix computations for nonabsorbing and weakly absorbing nonspherical particles. As a result, the maximum convergent size parameter for particles with small or zero absorption ca...
متن کاملTheory of Geometrical Methods for Design of Laser Beam Shaping Systems
From geometrical optics, the laws of reflection and refraction, ray tracing techniques, conservation of energy within a bundle of rays, and the condition of constant optical path length provide a foundation for design of laser beam shaping systems. Geometrical optics design methods are presented for shaping the irradiance profile of both rotationally and rectangular symmetric laser beams. Appli...
